The Truth Will Set You Free
"Pilar, my love." Martin smiled, he walked quickly down the stairs,
his eyes never leaving the woman in front of him. He could feel the eyes
of everyone in the room staring at him, he could hear the gasps from Theresa,
and Miguel''s date. Martin, ignored all of the commotion as he walked toward
Pilar. He was home, he could hold her again, the woman in front of him
was real, for the first time in years he wasn't dreaming.
Tears streamed down Pilar''s face, her arms opened wide as Martin finally
came to her, wrapping his arms around Pilar, taking in her scent. It hadn't
changed, She smelled like roses, just like years before. "I knew you would
return." She cried her whole body shaking. "I told them, I said you''d
be back." She sobbed, holding on with everything in her. She moved slightly
away from Martin, grabbing his face with her hands. "So, Handsome." She
smiled. She looked at his eyes, so bright, though time had aged him, he
was still her Martin, the man she had fell in love with. "Still so very
handsome." Her words came from her mouth slowly, her hands shaking as she
studied her husband.
"Pilar, I love you darling." Martin whispered, kissing her lips tenderly.
"I''ve always loved you." His kiss was all that she had remembered, it
was the one thing she had held on too. What his lips had felt like on her
on.
"Martin, I never gave up on you, I told them you'd return. I love you
so much." She said hugging him again. Pilar wouldn't let go, she had lost
him once, she would hold him now and always.
"Mama," A quiet voice whispered, causing Pilar to pull away, her eyes
met her daughter''s as she spoke.
"Theresa." She smiled.
"This is really Papa?" She asked carefully staring up at the man, it
had been so long, and the pictures showed a man much younger. Her heart
told her it was true, that her Papa was home, but her mind needed to hear
the words. She needed her mother to tell her so.
"Of course my child." Pilar laughed in mist of her tears.
"Theresa, you are so beautiful." Martin smiled reaching his hand out
to the woman in front of him. He could remember her as a small child, she
always wore pigtails, and she giggled at everything.
She took his hand, looking down at it, he had hands like Luis, big
and strong. Slowly he hugged her, Theresa felt her own hot tears form,
as she let her father hold her. She was happy, but confused all at the
same time. Her heart was beating quickly, this was what it was like to
have a father hold you, she had always wondered what if would feel like.
It had been so long, that she had forgot, and now, her papa was hugging
her, crying along with her.
"I missed you Papa." She sobbed. "I thought you died." She confessed.
"I''m so glad your home."
"Theresa, my sweet child, I have thought about you every day. "
"Papa I thought about you too."
She moved from her father''s arms, looking over at her younger brother.
"Miguel, its Papa." She cried.
Miguel stood next to Gwen, no tears, no smile. He just looked at his
mother and sister, then his eyes darted to Martin.
"You''re alive." He finally said, his voice deep, angry even.
"Yes son, I am."
"Were you hurt?" Miguel questioned, standing strong. He had to do what
Luis would have done, because that was his job now. Protecting his Mama
and Theresa, it was up to him.
"No." Martin said shaking his head.
"Did you loose your memory?" He asked next, part of him praying his
father would answer yes.
"No son I didn''t."
"So where have you been?" He finally asked, taking a deep breath.
Julian frowned. "Perhaps I should explain. "
Miguel stood tall, crossing his arms. "No, I want him to explain."
He said staring at Martin.
"Miguel." Pilar said her eyes hurt.
"Mama, we deserve an answer." He told her, refusing to back down, not
when the stakes were so high.
"Pilar, our son is right." Martin frowned. He knew coming back would
be hard, and the answers he had, might not be enough for his family, but
he could only be honest, and hope they understood.
Julian looked at Ivy, Clutching her hand he swallowed. "Let me tell
them Martin, I owe it to your family. After all I am the one that caused
this."
Chad turned his head quickly looking at his father. "You caused this?
Caused what exactly?"
"Chad son, I am the reason Martin left to begin with." Julian''s words
slipped from his mouth just as a prayer slipped from his mind. A prayer
that tomorrow he would still have his son.
"You did this?" Theresa whispered.
"Julian, this isn''t your fault." Ivy said her eyes watching his face
grow sad.
"Ivy, you know what they're talking about?" Gwen asked.
"Yes mother, do you know what''s going on? And why I am here?" Ethan
suddenly spoke up, he didn't know why he was there, but this was his mother
looking up at Julian, the man he had known as his father for years.
Pilar held her husband close to her, "Martin, you don''t have to explain
anything."
"Yes Mama, he does." Miguel insisted stepping forward.
Theresa chewed on her lip, stepping back so Chad could wrap his arms
around her waist. "Mama, I would like to know where Papa has been also."
She said finally, the back of her head resting on Chad''s chest as she
spoke. Her words made Pilar frown, but Miguel was right, so much had happened,
and they couldn't let it go.
"Your father is home! What more do you need?" Pilar cried out.
"Answers." Miguel frowned. "Because that is what Luis would want."
"Then answers is what you''ll get." Martin said looking over at Julian.
"Yes, its time we told you everything, I just pray you understand.
" Julian agreed, as he looked at his son, knowing he might ruin everything
with Chad, hoping the truth would bring them closer.
~*~*~*~*~
The group of people sat down in the living room, Theresa sitting next
to Chad, her head on his shoulder, his arms holding her close. Miguel sat
with Gwen, holding her hand, as he looked around the room. Martin of course
was with his wife, Pilar refusing to let him go. And Ivy sat next to her
son, looking up at Julian who stood beside her, his hands shaking as he
started to speak.
"I never dreamed of becoming who I am today, but losing my sister made
me see that I had to do the right thing for once. I no longer look at things
the same, I want my family, and as I watched Pilar suffer, I knew I could
no longer keep her from Martin. They needed each other, and Theresa and
Miguel, needed a father. " He began his head down, staring at the floor
he started to talk again. "Martin has always been a wonderful man, but
he found out something, over heard a secret he wasn''t suppose to hear."
He frowned, his eyes going to Ivy as she nodded for him to keep going.
"And Father, he went crazy that day! Yelling and screaming that Martin
had to be done away with."
"He must be done away with Julian."
"Father, You''re not asking me to kill him are you?"
"No of course not Julian. I''m ordering you to kill him you idiot.
He knows to much, and its your fault."
Julian swallowed. "I''ve never killed anyone. Father please." Julian
begged.
"Don''t act like a child Julian. This is what must be done, and you
will do it!"
"How?" Julian whispered.
"You will take my gun and you will shoot him, this get rid of the body!
Now leave me alone Julian! I have work to do."
"He wanted him dead?" Pilar gasped her heart breaking for Martin, and
for all he had been through.
Julian nodded. "Yes, and I might have been a lot of things back then,
But I''ve never been a killer."
"Julian saved my life." Martin added clutching Pilar''s hand.
"I didn''t save you, I ruined your life Martin. But together, we staged
his death." Julian said letting out a deep breath.
"How?" Chad questioned. "How''d you pull that off?"
Will this work?" Martin questioned weakly.
"Well it better work, or father will do the job instead of me." Julian
said nervously.
"Look after them will you? My family."
"Yeah, sure. Look we don''t have time for this, just do as I say and
you will live and I won''t become a murder today."
"Thank you Mr. Crane."
"You just better keep your mouth shut Martin! Or you will regret it."
"I promise you Mr. Crane I won't say a word."
"Well then let''s get on with this."
Julian let a faint smile fall to his lips, "It's the one time in my
life I''ve been able to pull something over on father. You see he gave
me the gun, told me to kill Martin, and get rid of the body. So one night,
I took that gun, went into my bathroom and filled it with blanks. When
I came out, Martin walked in the room and I shot him. It looked very real,
we even staged blood." He sighed. "Then Sheridan walked down the stairs,
my sister went to the body and knelt down, what Sheridan touched that night
looked like blood, thus the memory she had of that night. When she awoke
Father told her she had been bad, hurt a man. She cried for weeks afterward.
"
"This is unreal." Theresa whispered. "Where did Papa go?"
Martin looked at his child, "I traveled a lot." He frowned. "I had
to keep moving."
"He couldn't let father know he was alive." Julian frowned.
"Wait a second, why didn't you tell Mama? You left without saying a
word to her." Miguel suddenly blurted out.
"Son, I was afraid for my family, I didn't want to risk Alistair Crane
killing you."
"And he would have. Father has never cared about anyone, and when he
did find out Martin was alive, he said if he ever came back here, he''d
make sure he didn't have a family to come home too. "
Ethan looked at the people in the room, after much silence he spoke,
"You still haven''t told us the secret."
All eyes went to Ethan, and then Chad nodded. "Yeah, Julian what was
the big secret."
"Go on Julian, you can do this." Ivy coached smiling at her husband,
his eyes went down to her and he felt a warmth in his heart.
He nodded his head. "What Martin found out could change my life, all
our lives actually. But now that father can''t hurt us, I can tell you."
"What did you do to you father?" Chad asked frowning, he feared what
his father had to say, he had just began to accept him, what if he said
something that ruined all of that?
"I am going to have him committed." Julian said bluntly. "I have to
protect my family from him."
"That is very brave of you." Gwen smiled.
"The secret, can we get back to the secret?" Miguel asked. "We have
a right to know, what kept my father from us for so many years." He said
bitterly.
"Of course you do." Julian agreed. "You see, its quite simple really,
Martin heard the one thing that Father never wanted the world to know.
He found out something that only Father and I knew about."
"And that was?" Theresa asked.
"That was the fact that everything you see here, doesn't belong to
us."
"Say what?" Chad questioned.
"Son, we''re not Cranes, and neither is my father.
