Living a Lie
Mouth’s fell open as the words slipped off Julian’s lips. "We’re not
Cranes." He repeated, taking in a breath looking at his son.
"What do you mean we’re not Cranes?" Chad questioned. "You feeling
okay Julian?" He said his eyes wide.
"If you’d let him explain." Ivy said standing up, taking Julian’s hand
in support. "I’m sure you’ll all understand."
"Understand? Mother he isn’t making any sense at all." Ethan frowned.
"He’s talking crazy."
"Son, Julian isn’t crazy, not in the least little bit." Ivy said her
eyes warning her son to be quite.
Julian nodded his head, pacing as he began to talk again, his hands
shook of fear, "My grandmother, was a very interesting woman, though she
loved my grandfather it wasn’t enough." He began. "You see, he was much
like father, into business and ignoring her. "
"So what are you saying?" Chad asked.
"My grandmother cheated on my grandfather, she met this man, a man
we know little about, and became pregnant, Father was the outcome of the
affair. Of course she couldn’t admit the truth, so she kept it from everyone.
"
"I can’t believe this." Theresa gasped.
"It’s totally unbelievable." Gwen agreed.
Julian frowned. "Yes indeed it is. Father grew up believing he was
a Crane, it was only when my grandmother died that he learned the truth,
in a letter she had wrote him. "
"And that’s what Martin over heard." Pilar said looking at her husband.
"You must understand, this was something father never wanted anyone
to know, his father never knew and if anyone had of found out, he would
have lost everything. He told me, but made me promise to keep my mouth
shut. I was so shocked but what could I do? I didn't want to loose what
I had worked for."
"Like I did?" Ethan questioned. "You took everything from me, for the
same reason." He growled bitterly.
"Father forced me." Julian frowned.
"Wait, I thought when your mother died you received everything that
belonged to her." Gwen questioned.
Julian nodded, "Yes, Sheridan and I received a large sum from our mother,
but Father, she gave him nothing. All he has is what he has gained as a
Crane, and we are not blood Cranes."
"Who’s your real grandfather?" Chad questioned.
Julian frowned. "That I don’t know. Father said Grandmother wouldn’t
give out that information, she feared that my Grandfather would have him
killed."
"That’s so sad." Theresa frowned, clutching on to Chad’s hand.
"So is that it?" Miguel suddenly asked.
"That’s the truth." Julian nodded.
Miguel stood up and faced his father, "That isn’t good enough." He
frowned. "You could have found a way to tell my mother you were alive."
"Son, I couldn’t. I wanted to." Martin began but stopped as Miguel
began to shake his head.
"You didn’t want to, or you would have. Why not leave a note? Or make
a phone call? Would that have hurt you?
"Miguel don’t." Pilar said looking at her youngest son.
"Don’t what Mama? Speak the truth? " Miguel questioned.
"We’re all shocked and confused right now Miguel, please just wait."
Theresa begged causing her brother to lower his head.
"I hope you all understand now." Julian said, turning to focus back
on himself.
"I’m not a Crane." Chad sighed.
"No, but your still my son." Julian smiled. "Nothing has really changed
Chad."
"Things have changed for me." " Ethan frowned. "Grandfather did to
me, what his father would have done to him. Why didn’t he just understand?
Why didn’t you understand?" He questioned Julian.
"Ethan, I know what your feeling and I’m truly sorry." Julian began.
"No see you don’t know what I’m feeling, not yet anyway."
"Ethan." Ivy said looking at her son. "Let it go."
"I bet there’s still a few true Crane’s around. Wouldn’t they like
to know the truth? That the two men that own all the Crane billions aren’t
even Crane’s. " He smiled bitterly.
"You will not tell them." Ivy glared at her son. "Julian might not
be a Crane, but he has worked hard, this belongs to him."
"Mother surely you must be mistaken, you see when I found out I wasn’t
a Crane I lost everything, even the things I had worked for. I helped this
family and received nothing, so why should anyone else? "
"I made a huge mistake Ethan, I told you that already, but I asked
you here because I believed I could trust you. In my heart you are still
my son."
"Save it." Ethan replied. " I don’t want to hear it tonight." Ethan
said running out of the room slamming the door behind him.
"And neither do I." Miguel said looking at his father. "I’m glad you’re
back, but I have a lot to think about."
"Son." Martin said standing up.
"Son? Oh that’s right I am your son, but then again, Luis is the one
that raised me, so I guess that remains to be seen." He shot at Martin
as he fled the room heading to the study.
"I’ll go talk to him." Gwen sighed, standing up, walking quickly after
Miguel.
"He’s just confused." Theresa said frowning, "Honestly, he has dreamed
of this day for years." She told her father.
"I expected as much." Martin frowned.
"Martin, let Gwen talk to him, he’ll be fine, you’ll see."
Julian shook his head and wrapped his arms around Ivy. "This is all
my fault. I should have came clean years ago. "
Martin looked at Julian, "You saved my life, I will never forget that.
And you protected my family for years."
"But if I could’ve disagreed with Father." He frowned.
"Julian, don’t do this." Ivy frowned. "Please."
Julian turned to face Pilar and Theresa, "Will you forgive me?"
Theresa stood up and smiled, "You’ve brought my papa home, there is
nothing to forgive." She said hugging Julian. "And your secret is safe
with me as well." She smiled.
"Thank you so very much!"
"Julian, you did what had to be done, your father is a very scary man.
I understand." Pilar agreed. "And you deserve everything here, you’ve worked
for it, I won’t say a word."
Chad smiled over at his father. "And you’ve got my word, I ain’t telling
a soul."
"Aunt Resa, we heard yellin’." A tiny voice said from the stairs.
Theresa laughed when she saw Kendra and Jada standing at the top of
the stairs.
"Kenji, I’ve got a big surprise for you." Theresa said as the two girls
bound down the stairs.
"A surprise?" The little girl giggled.
"Yelp." Theresa said taking Kendra’s hand and pulling her over to where
Martin stood. "Baby you remember daddy telling you story’s about his papa?"
Theresa asked as the little girl nodded her head up and down.
"Yeah, he said he’d gone away."
"Baby, he’s back. Kenji, meet your grandfather."
"I gots a grandfather?" Kendra said as her huge brown eyes went to
Martin.
