Chapter 15
Paloma was scared when she saw the look in her girlfriend’s eyes. She
dropped the food she had been carrying and tried to rush to her love’s side.
Jessica’s pale arm stopped her.
“No.” Through her haze, Jessica knew something important and violent
was about to happen.
“Get your hands off of me. Simone might get hurt.” Paloma was about to
make her way to Simone’s side again when Simone stopped her.
“Stay back. Take Jessica home.” Simone stood up face to face with Spike
and did not take her eyes off of him.
“But..”
“No! Baby, take Jessica home, your place or hers but not here. NOW!”
She cut her off.
Simone had been waiting for this moment ever since he beat her up last
time. She worked out while thinking of the day she could whoop his butt
and something inside her was jumping up and down with excitement. Mostly
though, she saw red.
“Yea, ‘baby’ go home. Wouldn’t want you to see what I’m going to do to
your girlfriend.” Spike spat out nastily. He was tired of dealing with
Jessica’s guard dog. In some ways, Simone was worse than her brothers and
her father put together. He hadn’t wanted to admit it, but she almost kicked
his ass last time.
After Jessica and Paloma were gone to home, Simone threw the first punch,
she knew they would go for help and she wanted to get some good hits in
before the police arrived. Spike wiped the blood from his mouth and socked
Simone hard on the face. She fell down and waited until Spike was in the
right position in front of her. Just as he was going to kick her stomach,
she tripped him and he fell on his butt. She then proceeded to kick him
in the face. At one point he took her by surprise and bit through her shoe.
She yelped in pain, giving him time to stand up. He could barely see but
he began to go after her in a rage. He only stopped when he felt steel against
his neck.
“If you take one more step to lay one more hand on the young lady, I
will kill you. Rest assure, I would get a medal.” Julian appeared to have
come out of nowhere. He had been walking along the pier thinking of Eve,
when he saw Simone kicking some poor man in the face. He was going to help
her or call the police when he saw the young man get up and start punching
towards Simone. His heart leaped for a moment and he did the only thing
he knew how to do.
“Mr. Crane! You don’t have to do this.” Simone wiggled her toes to make
sure he hadn’t done any damage but she could see that Mr. Crane was not moving.
The last thing she needed was her mother’s boyfriend coming to her rescue.
“I don’t mind. I never get to use this gun. You would be surprised how
boring this town can be.” Julian almost enjoyed the feeling of fear that
was radiating off of Spike.
“This is between me and the lady.” Spike barely made the words out. He
was hoping that somehow this lunatic would just let him.
“Excuse me? We weren’t talking to you. And did you hear what she called
me? Mr. Crane. I’m Crane. Now, that means that I can kill you and they would
never find the body. Most police officers don’t look for a dead pimp, much
less if they are encouraged not to. So, you and the lady can resolve things
right now. I’m not moving the gun. You make one false move and I will shoot
you. I’ve shot better men for lesser things.” Julian wasn’t lying. Simone
could tell by the grim tone of his voice.
“Just stay away from Jessica. Ever. She doesn’t need the hooker life
you got her into. Or the drugs.” Simone was suddenly a little afraid of
Julian and glad for it. If she as a little afraid, the punk Spike must
be crapping his pants.
“You heard her. If I even hear of Jessica so much as turning a dime…I
will find you. I will kill you. That will be it.” With that, Julian used
his hand to search Spike for weapons and threw them over to Simone. He released
him but kept his gun up. He knew that characters like Spike were smart
enough not to mess with him. He shot at Spike’s heel, missing on purpose
by half an inch, and watched Spike run. He even though he didn’t fear Spike,
there was no harm in insurance.
“Thank you!” Simone jumped in Julian’s arms and kissed his cheek. She
was as surprised as he was by this outburst of emotion.
“Well…you didn’t have to do that. I think I hear the Calvary coming so
I will just ease back to where I came from. Here is my card. If he comes
near you again, call me. He’ll be handled.” Julian didn’t hear anyone coming,
he smelled Eve’s perfume in the night air. Even now, the smell caused his
body to react.
“I guess Jessica and Paloma sent for help. Don’t you want to stay? I’m
sure my mother would be glad to see you.”
Julian caught something in her voice and smiled. He knew that he always
liked Simone, despite the fact that she was T.C.’s daughter.
“You aren’t dumb, are you? Well, in any case, I’m not sure she would
be keen on seeing me and I know your father wouldn’t be. Let’s keep what
happened here between me and you. I see them coming up. Take this gun and
tell them that you needed it for self defense. Say you stole it from Spike
or something. Call whenever.” Julian rushed off just before the first of
the group came to see Simone.
“Don’t you ever do that again.” Paloma gathered Simone into her arms
in what seemed like a friendly hug. Everyone gathered around them slowly
feeling the concern and fear drain out of them at the sight of Simone in
one piece. Eve and T.C. had been scared out their wits when Paloma and
Jessica came home and told them what was going on.
“I’m grateful to you for how you stood up to Spike, Simone. But you should
not make a habit out of it. Where is he anyway? And what the hell are you
doing with that gun?” Sam looked around and kept his arm around his daughter.
He knew that he wasn’t letting her out of his sight ever again.
“Um, I got it off of Spike when he attacked me. When I pulled it on him,
he ran away. I don’t think he’ll back.” Simone recovered quickly. She gave
Paloma a quick squeeze as signal to let go. She loved being in her arms
but a hug too long might be seen more than friendly.
“How do you know?” Sam felt something not quite right was going on. Especially
since he saw Julian Crane disappear before everyone else showed up.
“I just do.”
