Twisted, Chapter 16 (Eve/Chance/Julian)

Chapter 16
Eve tried to down the last week in the bottom of a shot glass. It did not
work. During the day she was bogged down with phone calls from T.C. begging
for her to come home. During the night, she was haunted by dreams of Julian.
They had only made love once recently but the memory of him under her clothes
was enough to keep her tossing and turning until three in the morning. Her
youngest daughter had been attacked by some pimp creep and not only fought
him off but scared him away with some mystery gun. It was a crazy night
and all she could smell was Julian’s cologne in the air. She still felt
chills when she thought about Simone in danger. T.C. had been livid that
night.
“You need to stop this foolishness and come home, Eve. Of course, I’m not
cheating on you. I love you.” T.C. couldn’t look her directly in the eye
and lie so he focused on the door behind her.
“We are over T.C. Russell. Even if you weren’t sleeping with someone else,
this marriage is over.” She had gathered the last of her items to take to
the hotel. After she made sure Simone and Paloma (who had refused to leave
her best friend’s side) were okay, she was ready to leave.
“Does it even matter to you that our family is falling apart?” T.C. placed
his hand on hips and look very self righteous.
“You were right. I’ve changed. I’m not who you think I am, T.C. and you
don’t love this person. I have to go now. I loved you for a long time and
I loved our family and I love our daughters. But we are through. Now, go finish
screwing Liz.” It didn’t shock Eve that Liz had yet to tell T.C. about them
being sisters. After all, Liz got what she wanted.
The days that followed brought more calls by T.C., she would have to send
those papers. This was a night away from all of that, however. She found
a quaint little gay bar outside of Harmony that one of her out of town patients
raved about. She knew that no one in Harmony would be there and she could
escape for this one night. She was about to down another shot when she appeared
on stage. She was tall with broad shoulders that reminded Eve of her father.
She had the most gorgeous set of hazel eyes that seemed to stare right through
Eve. She was dressed so dramatic and her hair was long.
“ I can't catch no man
Hangin' out at a discotheque
But I believe in the boogie
Oh, but the boogie don't believe in me
Well, I got my way of groovin'
Sittin' down right in my seat
I get soul satisfaction
Yeah, without jumpin' up and down on my feet
Whoa...ho...disco guy
You'll be sorry if you pass me by
I've got what you need
Boy, I wouldn't tell you no lie
Why not give me a chance
I swear I could prove it
That don't mean I can't move it
And it's close to perfection
I just use it in another direction, yeah
Ooh...ooh...yeah”
(lyrics by Brainstorm)
Chance could not help but staring at the lovely lady who was downing drinks
like water. He saw her when he came in his street clothes and almost approached
her. He wasn’t sexually attracted to her (parish the thought) but something
about her seemed to draw him. When he got on stage and became the diva that
was Chance, the draw was even stronger. His performances were usually animated
to say the least, but this time he put a little something extra into it.
He really wanted to impress her and this was unusual for him. Usually the
only people remotely female that he worried about impressing were other drag
queens. He had never dared to this song before because Chance was about sad
love songs. Not tonight. When the set was over, he went straight to Eve.
“You are the most beautiful woman I’ve seen in a while.” Eve did not feel
shy around this wonderful being.
“You are the nicest straight middle American woman I’ve ever met.” Chance
took her hand and kissed it.
“I’ve never been here before. I don’t know protocol but would like to dance
with me?” Eve really wanted to dance and not by herself. She had no idea
who to approach about a dance here because the men seemed to be in their
own world and she didn’t want to lead any woman on.
“How do you know I won’t fall in love?” Chance gave her a devilish smile.
It almost floored Eve.
“I have a pretty solid hunch that you won’t. My heart is taken anyway.
I don’t want to speak about it. Just dance with me.” She grabbed Chance’s
hand and they moved their bodies to the beat. Each admired the way the other
used their hips to the music. Eve suddenly stopped when she sniffed the
air. She knew that cologne.
“Are you going to introduce me to your dancing partner or am I going to
have do it myself?” Julian had followed her to the gay club. He thought maybe
Simone (who had used this week to call him and just spill everything about
her) had told her mother and they would some nice outing. He didn’t see
Simone anywhere in the car, however.
“Oh my dear, she doesn’t need to introduce you. Crane, right?” Chance put
her hand out for Julian and Julian took it. Something about Chance caught
him. He almost felt his face redden.
“Never shook hands with a drag queen?” She whispered in his ear when he
took too long to speak.
“Not one as gorgeous as you, my dear.” Julian took his hand back and gave
his full attention to Eve.
“So, are you following me?” She led the two of them off of the dance floor.
Chance had no idea why she was still following them, this was clearly personal,
but she felt protective of Eve.
“Maybe.” Julian refused to look at her. He’d been following her for years,
off and on.
“Well, stop. I didn’t appreciate the threat and wedding invitation.” It
was the worse day Eve could remember since Julian left her the first time.
She opened her mail and there it was an invitation to the renewing of vows
of Rebecca and Julian as well as a not so veiled threat about the huge check
that had yet to go through for the hospital from the Cranes.
“Well, what can I say? I didn’t think you would care either way. You didn’t
tell me you even left T.C. I had to find out from Father.” He didn’t plan
on talking about Rebecca tonight. He hadn’t planned on talking.
“I was mad at you. I didn’t go renewing my vows. My God, Julian. How could
you ever claim to love me and force to watch you give yourself to another
woman?” Eve looked into his eyes because she wanted the truth from him.
“Well, darlings…that’s my cue to exit. Here is my card. My name is Chance.
Just holler if you need me.” Chance was getting uncomfortable and decided
that she had to leave. They barely acknowledged the exit but Eve held the
card in her hand tight.
Julian took Eve’s hand and pulled her to her feet. She was suddenly too
tired to fight him. He brought her in close for a passionate kiss that rocked
her core. She opened her mouth and invited him in her, enjoying the feel of
his body against hers. There was no talk of anger or Rebecca, just them at
that moment. He felt so hungry for her that he didn’t care who looked on.
His hands were everywhere on her-- her face, under her shirt, over her pants,
her hair. He only broke the kiss to kiss her neck, something he hadn’t done
in what seemed like too long.
“Oh, Julian. Damn, it’s been too long.” She reached under his shirt to
feel him.
“I know. I know. I want you so bad right now. I can’t help it.” He pulled
her face to his and looked her in the eye.
“People are starting to stare.”
“I don’t care.”
“You are renewing your vows to Rebecca.” She pulled away from him then,
remembering her hurt and anger.
“I know and you will be there. You have to be there. Bring Chance if you
want. It’s about time someone showed Rebecca how to properly imitate a drag
queen.” He pulled her back to him.
“Why are you doing this, Julian? You don’t love her. You love me. I know
you do. I feel you do.” She rubbed up close to him because she knew what
was there. He let out a groan and grabbed her bottom.
“Don’t do that to me, Eve. So help me, I will take you in this bar and
let everyone watch.” His tone was serious enough but Eve refused to move.
“So tell me, why? And why invite all of Harmony? No one likes either of
you.” Eve kissed his neck, letting her tongue play there.
“Damn, Eve. Come on, now. I can’t tell you the why. Just make sure you
are there. I would hate to cut funding from the hospital.” Julian tried
to regain his senses.
“I’ll come. I’ll look ten times better than your ‘bride’ and you will regret
ever leaving me, Julian Crane.” Eve finished off her threat with a kiss
so deep and hot that a couple sitting next to them cleared their throats.
She left him then, looking like an over excited fool.
“Women, huh?” One half of the lesbian couple nudged him and gave him an
understanding smile.
“Women, indeed. Would you two like to come to a vow renewal ceremony?”
