Chapter 22

Martin looked across the bed into Katherine’s eyes and knew he was doing the right thing.

“We have to break up.” He whispered.

“What?” Katherine still had sleep in her eye and was not sure she heard him correctly.

“We have to break up. I don’t like what this is doing to my family and our love…it was built on something horrible. I don’t think I can go on.” He remembered Julian’s threat. He loved Sheridan and hoped that he was making the right steps to being with her forever.

“But we’ve been together for years. I don’t understand. We were supposed to be married. Is there someone else?” She felt her heart breaking as she spoke each word. She knew there was someone else. A woman had been calling the line in their bedroom and hanging up when she answered. He seemed distant and they hadn’t made love in weeks.

“I’m sorry, but yes. I can’t go into detail now but I love her.” Martin knew that this would end ugly but this had to happen.

“Well screw you!” Katherine jumped out of bed. She could hardly see for the tears in her eyes as she fled the room.

Minutes later she was back with a vengeance. She took all of his clothes out of her drawers and opened the window.

“You don’t want to do that. Let’s not end this horribly. We had so many good years together. You can still find love with someone else.”

“Do not feed that crap to me, Martin. I know that line too well. Remember, your wife? Pilar? Do not!” She flung his stuff out onto the Crane lawn.

“Katherine, act like an adult. It’s the middle of the day. People can see.” Martin rushed out of bed and put on one of the few pairs of pants she hadn’t tossed out of the window.

“I’m an adult. You are homeless. Get OUT!” Katherine never knew she could be so angry and hurt at the same time but there it was.

Julian had just come from Eve’s room and was in time for the show. The door was cracked a little so he could see his mother throwing the cad’s clothes out of the window. He knew if his sister saw this side of their mother, then maybe she would give her a chance. Probably not. He wondered what Martin’s next move was though because he did not have a lot of options open to him. Julian hated to hurt his sister but this relationship with this man would go nowhere. Katherine had just started to claw Martin when Julian felt a tap on his shoulder.

“I see you are enjoying watching your mother act very low class. You like that type of woman don’t you?” Alistair asked his son.

“Well, it is entertaining. And you have never been one to turn shy from any type of bed, low class or not.” Julian tried to remain calm and not annoyed that his father could move like a cat.

“Where were you last night, son?” Alistair could not believe that Julian had gotten away from the men that he used to track him. He had to make sure that his son stayed away from Eve Russell.

“Enjoying a low class bed, father. I don’t need you watching my back on every step. I work hard enough for you in the office. You’re looking rather sick.” Julian took two cigars out of his pocket and handed his father one. Alistair accepted but waited until his son started smoking before he smoked his.

“I am not. This is what a man who works more than ‘hard enough’ looks like. Why aren’t you at the office, anyway? It’s the middle of the damned day.”

“Because I’m on a personal day. Get off of my case father. Now, if you will excuse me, I’m going to go pry my mother off of her boyfriend.”

Julian turned his back to his father, cigar in hand, and went to face his mother. Alistair felt a certain pride for his son that he had never felt before. He would still crush him with his secret plan but he felt that his son would rebound quicker than anticipated. Maybe his seed wasn’t all bad after all.

As soon as Julian closed the door, he stubbed out his cigar and drank from the vodka bottle he always kept for Eve.

“Mother, get off of Martin, this hardly becoming of a Crane.” He walked over to them with a smile on his face.

Later that evening, Rebecca cornered Julian in his library. He had his headphones and was listening to Eve on his mp3 player. He loved how her voice entered directly into his head; it was as though she were giving him his own private show.

“Soon, my darling, soon.” He whispered.

“Soon, what? Pookie?” Rebecca sunk up behind him and shocked ihim. Julian was growing tired of people surprising him.

“Soon, I will renew my vows to you and prove that Eve means nothing more than a roll in the hay to me.” Julian kissed her hand.

“I don’t buy it, Julian. You were in love with her. You told me so yourself. She was the only woman you have ever loved.” Rebecca sat on his desk and gave him her best pout. She was still riding high on her ‘afternoon delight’ but this thing with Julian had been bugging her. He asked her to remarry him and in front of everyone without giving a reason.

“She also did not bother to tell me the second she left her husband. That was in the past anyway. I won’t lie to you Rebecca. I don’t feel a great love for you. But you do serve your purposes. You are a good socialite wife and that will help. We also have an open relationship. I don’t lie to you and don’t lie to me.” Julian almost felt guilty.

“True. Well, as long as there is no funny business going on, I suppose it should be all right. Did you invite Terror?” A dark cloud came over her face.

“Of course. She’s my son’s mother and I plan on spending more time with him so you might get used to that. Everyone in Harmony is invited love. Mostly so I can show my power over them. Even T.C. Russell will come. Who knows, maybe he will try to beat me up and you can your entertainment.” He discreetly changed the music on his mp3 to lite rock while distracting Rebecca.

“Well, that would be fun. You wanna go to bed with me, Pookie? We haven’t done it in ages.” She trailed her finger along his lips.

“No. I want to wait till our ‘wedding night’. We can play naughty husband and shy virgin.” He knew this would spark her interest because they hadn’t played sex games in a while.

“Oh! That would be nice. Though I don’t know how good of a virgin I would make.”

“I’m sure you’ll be a great one. Now, be a dear and let me finish my work.” Julian scooted his wife out of his office and turned his mp3 player back on Eve.
