Twisted, Chapter 9 (Pilar and Eve talk)

Chapter 9
Three days later Pilar sat in front of Eve and tried to listen to her
prattle on about her health. Ever since her ‘husband’ had returned from
the ‘dead’, Pilar had been having serious headaches. Her blood pressure
was through the roof and at one point her hair started to fall off. After
he was caught kissing his ‘true-love’ Katherine (the red haired harlot as
Pilar penned her) two minutes before he was supposed to walk down the aisle
and renew their vows, her symptoms got worse. She could barely stand to
see people and was for once glad that her daughter got married to Alistair
Crane. She hated the man and her daughter’s decision but was happy that she
now had money she could lean on. One of the first things Theresa did after
she became Mrs. Crane (this time for real) was to cut Pilar a big check that
would take care of her for life. Her sons, Luis and Antonio, refused to take
the money. It was the first time they stopped their insipid arguing over
Sheridan.
Pilar was not thinking of her children or her health as Eve cautioned
her away from salty foods. She was thinking of the night she ran into Noah
and how wonderful it was. She was surprised to see him and even more surprised
he was still handsome. She was secretly glad that none of her children went
away to college because she feared they would all become alcoholics who believed
they knew more than her. Had she known their lives would turn out into the
mess it was now, she would have gladly made them extra large sweaters for
their beer bellies. Noah definitely did not have a beer belly.
“It’s so nice to see you, Mrs. Lopez Fitzgerald.” He looked down at his
shoes when he talked to her. She could tell he was nervous.
“I’m Pilar to you, Noah. It’s nice to see you as well. What are you doing
home?” She walked closer to him so they could have a real conversation. She
had been waiting all night for a real conversation.
“Well, I had some trouble out in college. I’ve got a job near town and
wanted to help out my dad after mom left.” Noah’s face darkened when he mentioned
his mother. He could not believe that she just left his dad after over twenty
years of marriage. He didn’t make mention of wanting to help with Jessica
but Pilar already knew. It was no secret that his sister was a drugged out
hooker.
“I’m glad you are home. Not that I missed you in that way. What we had
was great but, as you know, it can’t happen again.” She brushed a stray hair
off of her face and looked determined. It didn’t work because at those words
Noah kissed her softly on the lips.
“I know no such thing.”
“Pilar! Damn it, are you listening?” Eve looked up into her friend’s eyes.
She was seriously concerned about her friend’s well being but it seemed as
though Pilar could care less.
“I am, Eve. I’m going to stay away from salty foods. I do not eat them
very much anyway. I thank you for your concern.” Pilar picked up her purse
to leave. Maybe she would have Noah bring her over something sweet. She would
worry about the guilt later.
“What is going on with you, Pilar?” Eve placed her hand on her friend’s
arm. She didn’t have many friends in town since it came out that she faked
the DNA test that said John was Grace’s son. She gave some weak excuse about
drinking that day to deal with stress but she had to tell Grace the truth.
If Grace hadn’t left with David, Ivy would have spilled the more embarrassing
truth. It took Eve a while to get her medical reputation back up (luckily
someone always needed saving in this town) otherwise she didn’t know where
she would be. Pilar was the only one who knew everything besides Julian and
most likely Alistair.
“I love you, Eve, but this…I cannot share.” Pilar looked deeply into her
friend’s eyes and hoped she would get the point. She never judged Eve for
her past and for all of her lies, Eve was the most sincere person Pilar knew.
“Pilar has a secret? Not possible.” Eve would not push any further but
could not help but kid her friend.
“Pilar has a secret and Pilar is not sharing.” She smiled back and patted
Eve’s hair.
“Well, you are definitely improving in your mood. I know your life has
been some special sort of hell lately. I will keep you in my prayers.” Eve
knew she didn’t need to go into details about her friend’s life. She was
glad that her children were seemingly out of drama.
“Yes, my mood is improving. One day, maybe, I will tell you why. But yes,
keep me in your prayers and you will be in mine. The Lord answers us in mysterious
ways.”
