the Book Cafe - the next day
Taking a drink of his coffee, Chad noticed a young guy standing behind
the counter fiddling with the cash register. "Can I help you with something?"
he asked.
"I wasn't stealing anything! This thing is just stuck."
"Here," Chad leaned over the counter and hit a button on the register
drawer opened, "you must be the guy Beth hired today." Chad extended his
hand, "Chad Harris."
"Ty Ellis," he said taking Chad's hand and shaking it.
"Hey Ty, I see you've met Chad." Beth said coming up behind Chad.
"Yeah, I think I have this cash drawer thing figured out. Thanks for
the help man." Ty said looking at Chad.
"No problem." Chad answered taking another drink of his coffee.
"That's great. I thought you were working the late, late shift tonight."
Beth said looking at Chad.
"I am, but I needed to get away from my place for a while. So I came
by here for some coffee."
"Oh okay, and hey, since you're working so late, would you mind locking
up for me?" Beth asked showing her sweet and innocent smile.
"Do I ever, Beth?" Chad smiled back at her.
"No, and thank you again."
"So what's his name?" Chad asked curiously.
"Mark, and get this, he's a professor at Castleton College." Beth said
glowing.
"You've struck gold, honey."
"Yes, I have. Hey, would you mind helping me take some boxes I have
in the back room to the alley since you're here?"
"No problem, but after that I have to head over to that fruit tree's
house and get some C/D's I let Jessica borrow," Chad said, sitting down
his near-empty coffee mug, "nice meeting ya."
"Yeah, you too." Ty said thinking about the 'fruit tree' comment.
Pushinhg the thought away, Ty went back to work, taking orders from
various customer. A few moments later, he saw a familiar face in front
of him. "Simone?"
"Hey Ty. Do you work here?"
"Yeah, I just started about an hour ago."
"Oh, but what about your community service?"
"Finished it this morning. The end of my 6 week work!"
"That's great. So is this what your going to be doing the rest of the
summer? Work?"
"Yeah, right," he said with a sly smile. "So Simone, have you been
keeping busy on these summer nights?" immediately feeling like an idiot
for asking her that question. It was almost like he was asking her if she
was keeping busy in bed.
"Well, since I only got out of the hospital a few days ago, I've been
keeping my plans at a slow pace to keep my Mom from jumping on my back
about staying healthy."
"Well, you were out last night." 'Subtlety was never your thing buddy.'
Ty thought to himself.
"How did you know that?"
"I went by your place last night and your sis told me you were out.
She didn't tell you?"
"No, but we kind of got into it the moment I walked through the door,
so she didn't really have a chance to tell me."
"Oh," Ty said softly while silently think 'Hopefully she won't ask
me why I came by her house.'
"So, Ty, why did you come by my house? Simone asked suspiciously.
Quickly thinking of a good and believable lie, Ty threw out an answer,
"Well, I heard of this party outside of town and with everything you've
gone through, you know the accident, I thought you could use the fun. But
there's another right down on the beach tonight if you don't have any other
plans."
"That sounds like fun. I'll think about it since I missed the other
one."
"Oh you didn't miss anything. I found out it got canceled before I
got there. I'm sure you were much happier where ever else you were."
"I would have been happier where I was even if there was a party."
Simone said smiling. Seeing Ty's curious look, she continued, "it was my
first real date with my boyfriend." She said still glowing.
"Boyfriend?" Ty said trying to hide his disappointed look, but failed.
He turned around hoping Simone didn't catch on. "I hope it's not that guy
from chem. class. I didn't like the way he was eyeing those chemicals and
lab rats."
"No, he's an older guy, you'll probably meet him sometime soon. He
works here. Chad Harris."
Hearing that name, Ty turned back around, "Chad? Oh yeah, I met him
already."
"He's here?" Simone asked looking around for Chad.
"He was, but he just stopped by for some coffee and left. So I take
it you won't come to the beach party tonight since I heard Chad has to
work." Ty asked seeing her disappointment in not seeing her boyfriend.
"Probably not."
"It'll be a lot of fun." Ty said slightly leaning over the counter.
"Well, Chad did tell me I should spend some more time with my friends
going away for school."
"And this would be a great opportunity to. A lot of Harmony High grads
for our class will be there."
"Yeah, ya know what I think I will." Eyeing Kay coming through the
door, "And I think I'll see if Kay'll want to tag along with me."
"Sounds good. So I'll defiantly see you tonight?"
"Yeah, I'll see ya then." Simone said before turning around and walking
to Kay who had met her halfway.
"See ya." Ty said watching Simone until she left moments later with
Kay, but not until turning around and giving Ty a slight smile as she walked
out the door. Ty couldn't help but smile at her until she was gone out
of the room and then let his thoughts speak.
"Boyfriend. And just my luck, I work with him."
