Mind of a Child

Jada sat down on her bed and looked at her daddy, "Is she here to get me?" She said her voice a bare whisper of the fear her eyes showed.
"Oh no baby. Never!" Chad said sitting down next to Jada. "She’s not taking you anywhere."
"Daddy, why is she here? " Jada said crawling back into Chad’s lap.
Chad wrapped his arms around Jada. "I don’t really know angel. Daddy doesn’t always understand everything."
"Do you like her very much?" Jada quizzed.
Chad frowned kissing his little girl’s forehead. "Baby I loved your mom a lot once."
"Not now though." Jada said putting her tiny hand in her father’s big hand. " Daddy please don’t let her take me." Jada said chewing her lip. "Cause I wanta live with you and Justin forever." She said as a tear rolled down her face.
"Jada, what makes you think she would take you?"
" My friend Robin moved cause her mommy took her away from her daddy. Please don’t let her take me, I don’t wanta leave." Jada whispered.
"Oh baby, she ain’t taking you away from me. You’re stuck with daddy for a long time." Chad smiled.
"Promise?" Jada questioned.
"I promise."
Jada grinned. "Gotta do the nose thing."
Chad smiled and leaned down rubbing his nose with Jada’s. "Promise on you’re cute little nose." He said as Jada giggled.
"Daddy, I love you." Jada said wrapping her arms around Chad’s neck.
"And I love you baby girl."
"I know that daddy." Jada said giggling again.

Theresa sat frozen as she realized what she had just heard. Carrie was back? Jada’s mother had finally came home? "This is not suppose to be happening." Theresa cried.
"God please don’t let Chad leave me. " She prayed.
"Aunt Resa." A tiny voice sounded.
Turning around Theresa saw Kendra walking toward her. "Why you crying?" She questioned plopping down next to Theresa on the sofa.
"Resa was just sad. I’m find now." She said wrapping her arm around the little girl.
"Was it cause of my mess? I can clean it up, and I won’t ever cook again." Kendra said smiling.
"No baby, I cleaned that all up."
"Chad make you cry? Cause if he did, Uncle Miguel will handle it."
Theresa forced a smile. "What makes you say that?"
Kendra shrugged. "Dunno, but he told me if a boy ever made me cry he’d take care of it."
"Well Chad didn’t make me cry." Theresa told her.
"You still sad about mommy and daddy then?" Kendra quizzed.
"Yeah. How did you know?"
Frowning Kendra rested her head on Theresa’s shoulder. "Cause I get sad all the time. I miss them bunches."
"Why don’t you talk to me when you get sad Kenji?"
Shrugging the small girl frowned. "Cause then you’d be sad too. Besides I talk to mommy and daddy ‘bout it."
Theresa gave her a strange look. "You talk to them? How do you mean?"
Kendra smiled. "I just talk to them. Mommy’s a angel and everything and Uncle Julian said she could hear me, so I tell her how much I miss her. "
Theresa felt a lump grow in her throat. "And what about your daddy?"
"Oh I talk to him too. But he’s not a angel, he’s up there in Heaven taking care of people." She smiled. "Grandma Pilar said so."
Theresa nodded. She was suddenly filled with so much emotion, pain and sadness entered her again.
"I just wanta smell her sometimes. Cause mommy smelled sweet." Kendra said looking up at Theresa. "Do you miss smelling her?"
Theresa smiled. "I have a idea." She said trying push Chad and Carrie out of head. " There’s a big box of stuff in my bedroom Uncle Miguel sent over when we moved you and Matt over here. I think some of you’re mommy’s stuff is in it."
Kendra’s brown eyes lit up as she jumped up from the wine colored sofa. "Can we go look in it?" She pleaded grabbing Theresa’s hands. "Please."
Rising to her feet Theresa nodded. "Of course baby." Theresa took her soft hand and lead her up the stairs, as thoughts of Chad and Carrie once again stuck in her mind.

Kendra flopped down in the floor next to the box Theresa had directed her too. "What’s in here?" She whispered staring down into all the memories.
Theresa sat down beside her and looked in, taking out a book she smiled. "Look Kenji, its you’re baby book." Theresa smiled looking at the book, colored in yellow and pink.
"What’s in it?" Kendra asked as Theresa opened it.
"Well its all the stuff you’re mommy collected and kept up with when she was pregnant with you."
"So she wrote all this stuff when I was in her tummy?" Kendra asked.
"And after you were born." Theresa nodded.
"Read it to me." Kendra said her eyes staring at the pages.
Theresa nodded and flipped through the book, until Sheridan’s writing appeared to her. Scanning the page Theresa swallowed.
"What is it?" Kendra asked curiosity in her eyes.
"Its a letter you’re mommy wrote before you were born."
"To me?" Kendra smiled.
"Would you like me to read it to you?" Theresa asked looking at the girl as her head bobbled up and down.

My darling baby,

I just found out today you are a girl! I knew it all along, but Luis told me not to get my hopes up. In four short month’s I can finally see you, look into your eyes and hold you. It will be a moment I will never forget. My little girl, do you know how much I love you already? You mean more to me than I ever thought possible. Just having you inside of me has changed my whole life. You have made me a better person baby. I picked out your name today also. Kendra Malana will be your name my angel. Kendra because it means Magical, and Malana because it means light. That is what you are to me, my Magical Light, changing my life each day for the better. Sweetie one day when you’re older I’ll do all the things with you, I never got to do with my mother. I want to be your best friend, and I want you to love me as much as I love you. Everyday I look down and see my stomach, I smile, knowing you’re there waiting to come out and see the world. I have so much to do with you, things to teach you, and things I want to learn. I can’t wait to get started! I wonder if you will have eyes like me, or like your father. I hope you look just like your daddy, from his smile to that twinkle in his eye. Your daddy loves you so much too. He kisses my belly every night and tells you a story. Always about a princess who has everything she could ever want. You will be that Princess, because Daddy and I will give you everything we never had. Two parents who love you and will always be there. I love you my sweet Kendra Malana.

Always,
Your Mommy

Theresa wiped the tears from her face and looked down at Kendra. "You okay baby?" She questioned.
"Mommy lied." Kendra muttered.
"What did you say sweetheart?"
"Mommy lied! She said she’d be here for a long time and she’s gone. " Kendra yelled standing up tears falling from her eyes."
"Oh sweetie, no its not like that."
"Yes it is! She promised and she left anyway! She said always and she didn’t mean it!" Kendra cried out turning and running from the room.
Theresa took a deep breath and wiped away her tears. "Kendra come back!" She called out as she spun out of her room to chase down the brokenhearted child.

Chad walked down the stairs of him home Jada in his arms. "I see you’re still here." He frowned at Carrie.
"Yes, of course I am."
"Well did I hear my phone ring?" He asked staring at the woman.
"Yes you did, I answered it." Carrie replied then crossed her arms. "It was some woman."
"Woman?" Chad whispered.
"That’s right. A woman looking for you."
Chad’s heart began to pound as Theresa’s face came into his mind. "I’ve got to go." He said looking up at Carrie.
"What? You can’t just leave." She commanded.
"Oh yes I can." Chad said then looked at Jada. "Wanta go see Grandpa Julian? Daddy’s gotta go talk to someone."
Jada smiled. "Sure daddy."
"Who are you going to see?" Carrie yelled. "This is more important."
"No, this can wait. But she can’t." He said grabbing his coat, then looking back at Carrie. "You, Out, now." He said pointing toward the door.
Slowly Carrie swayed out the door a frown stuck on her face. "But this isn’t over." She informed Chad.
"Oh you got that right." He said shutting his door. "But right now I’ve gotta go fix something." He finished heading to his car.
