Chapter eight

One minute she was leaning on the rail staring out at the water, the next minute Eve was screaming as she plummeted into the very water that she had been staring at for the last ten minutes. The impact of the fall knocked the wind of her instantly, as she struggled to come up for some air. While Eve struggled to come back up, the young man was kicking his shoes off and taking off his jacket. It had been a total accident when he knocked the woman over the rail and into the water. The least he could do was help her out. Once his shoes and jacket were off, he jumped over the railing and into the water to search for the woman he knocked over.

Whitney had been walking around the wharf for a while now. She was still reeling from the information her mother had just told her. Almost being sexually assaulted by her stepbrother, how her parents treated her differently than Pierce and Liz, her life with Julian, their son, everything her mother went through was traumatic and horrible. She only did what she had to do to survive. If she were in mother's shoes, she would have done the same thing too. As she continued walking, someone a few of feet ahead of her started calling her.

"Whitney!" the person shouted. Whitney had to scrunch her eyes to see who had called her from up ahead because it had gotten so dark that she had to make sure she wasn't hearing or seeing things.

"Whitney over here!" they shouted again.

Walking a little bit farther, she saw that it was Chad who had called out to her.

"Hey baby, what are you doing out here alone by yourself?" Chad said to her as he leaned in and kissed her on the cheek.

"I'm here with my mother."

"Dr. Russell? I haven't seen her in months, how is she doing?"

"Chad, she looks amazing. I've never seen her looking like this before." Whitney said with a small smile on her face.

"Well I'm glad that she is alright."

"Thank you. Chad?" Whitney said.

"Yeah."

"I know you've heard some of the things that people have said about my mother right?"

"Yeah I heard some things."

"The things they're saying about her are not true. Chad, if you could've heard her story, you would be shocked. I was hurt and disappointed when her past came out in the beginning, but now I see that all of the things that she did, she did them to survive." Whitney said as a tear fell from her right eye.

Chad then stepped closer and pulled Whitney's body close to his as he kissed the top of her head. After the kiss, the two of them heard a scream and wondered who it was.

"Did you hear that?" Whitney said in a trembling voice.

"Yeah, it sounded like a woman screaming."

"A scream…a woman's scream... Oh my god Chad, my mom!" she shouted frantically.

Wasting no time Chad said "Let's go." as he grabbed Whitney by her hand and started running in the direction of the scream. Running as fast as their legs would go, they made it over to the place where Whitney had last saw Eve.

"Mom! Mom!" Whitney shouted as she looked all over for any signs of her mother.

"Dr. Russell!" Chad called out too.

Just then, movement down below caught the attention of Whitney and Chad as they spotted a young man helping Eve out of the water and on to the ladder for them to climb up. Whitney watched as her mom and the young man climbed up the ladder heading her way before she moved out of the way to give them some room.

"Mom! Oh my god! Are you okay?" Whitney asked with panic in her voice.

"Dr. Russell, are you alright?" Chad asked too.

Eve was down on her hands and knees coughing up water and gasping for air before she answered "I'm…I'm fine honey, Chad…thanks to this young man right here." Eve said as she looked at the young man who was climbing over the railing, before he slumped down next to the three of them.

After climbing up and over the rail, the young man landed next to Eve, Whitney and Chad. When he looked up to see who it was that he had bumped into the water and eventually had to save, his heart jumped right into his throat. 'Oh my god…it's her…my mother.' He thought to himself. A look of absolute shock appeared on his face before he recovered and spoke. "Um…You don't have to thank me mo…I mean ma'am. It was all my fault to begin with. If I had been looking where I was going, then you wouldn't have gotten bumped into the water." The young man said as he realized he almost slipped up and called her mother.

This was the first time that he actually had contact with her up close and this was something that he had always wanted.

"But still, thank you for saving my mother." Whitney said to the young man as she offered her hand to him.

'Her mother…then that makes this girl my sister.' He thought to himself again before he shook her hand. "Well then you're welcome."

"I'm Whitney Russell by the way, this is my boyfriend Chad Harris and you've already met my mother, Dr. Eve Russell."

'She got married and had other children!' "Well it's nice to meet all of you, my name is Devin Johnson."

"It's nice to met you too Devin." Whitney said before she looked back at Eve and realized that she was trembling. "Mom, we have to get you out of these clothes, we don't want you back in the hospital again."

"I know. Devin, I don't know how I'll ever be able to thank you for saving me, but if you'll allow me to, I'd like to take you out to lunch tomorrow?" Eve said as she continued to tremble slightly.

"I…I'd like that very much." He said hesitantly with a smile on his face.

"Okay. Tomorrow 11 a.m. at the coffee house."

"I'll be there. Oh look at the time, I have to go, but I'll see you tomorrow Dr. Russell and it was nice meeting you Chad and Whitney." Devin said as he grabbed his stuff that was lying a few feet ahead of them and took off before anyone could offer him a ride home.

When Devin was far away from Eve, Whitney and Chad, the anger that he had to keep in check while talking to them instantly appeared as he balled his fist up and punched a nearby garbage bin. She didn't recognize him, (punch) she didn't even know he was her son (punch) and that hurt him deeply (punch, punch). He didn't think it would hurt this much, but it did. He never knew she had gotten married, had more children and to top it all off, was a doctor now. 'She didn't give a damn about me at all. First she left us for Julian Crane, then obviously left him too, became a doctor, got married to someone else and had other children. And now she was back with Julian again. Damn her!' Devin thought as he punched the garbage bin again. After venting out his anger for about ten minutes, he put his stuff back on, then walked off and continued home.

Meanwhile, after Devin left the three of them alone back on the pier, it was decided that Chad would take Whitney home and Eve would drive back to the mansion alone. Whitney wanted Eve to go to the hospital to be checked out anyways, but Eve said she was fine and that Whitney should let Chad take her home. They disagreed for about five minutes before Whitney finally gave up and allowed Chad to take her home, but only if Eve allowed them to follow her back to the mansion.

So here Eve was, driving home back to the mansion with Chad and Whitney following right behind her. As she pulled up into the driveway of the Crane mansion, she honked her horn to let them know that she was fine before they drove off on their own. Getting out of the car, Eve hurried into the mansion and ran upstairs to her room to change. Fifteen minutes later, she came out of the bathroom dressed in her purple and black robe and sat in front of her mirror brushing her damp hair when there was a knock her on door.

"Come in…" she said. The door opened and in came Julian still dressed in his business suit from earlier.

"Am I interrupting you?" he said.

"Not at all Julian. So how was your day?"

"It was good, Fox and I got a lot of work did together but we're still just taking things one step at a time you know?" Julian said.

"I'm glad you and Fox are getting along better." She said then waited about a minute before she spoke again. "I went by the house today after my appointment and run in with Ivy." Eve said as she put her brush down then turned to look at Julian, who was standing up behind her.

Concern was written on Julian's face as he walked up next to her and took a hold of her left hand squeezing it softy.

"How did it go?" he asked.

"T.C. and I got into a big argument and Whitney heard us. He threatened to keep my girls away from me Julian."

"I'm sorry Eve."

"He even had the nerve to bring up our son. That was it, that was the last straw for me, so I went off of on him and you know what…?" Eve said with a smirk on her face.

"What? Julian said as he looked at the wicked gleam in Eve's eyes.

"It felt wonderful! I finally stood up to him and I feel great." She said excitedly as she got up from her chair and threw her arms around Julian's neck.

Julian was completely thrown off guard when Eve did that, but you didn't see him complaining about it. Eve then lay her head down on his shoulder before she continued with the rest of the story.

"After our argument, Whitney came out and wanted to know the truth. So I asked her to come with me and she said yes. We went to the wharf and I told her everything Julian." She said. "Afterwards, she said she needed some time along, so I waited. Then next thing you know, I'm knocked into the water."

When Eve said that, Julian got scared. Julian pulled Eve from his shoulder a little and looked her in the eyes with panic written all over his face.

"You're not hurt are you?" Julian asked in a concern voice and with a pout on his lips too. Eve just looked at him, and then smiled. 'Julian you are so cute when you pout your lips up like that.' She thought to herself before answering. "No I'm fine. The young man who bumped me actually jumped in after me and helped me to get out of the water. When we got back up top, Whitney and Chad were there."

"How the hell did Chad get there?" Julian said. 'This just got really confusing.' He thought.

"Apparently Whitney ran into him I guess. Anyways, Whitney and I thanked the young man, then I asked him to have lunch with me tomorrow."

"Eve's he's a total stranger. Why would you ask him to have lunch with you?"

"Because a 'thank you' really isn't good enough when someone saves your life. So I thought that I'd treat him to lunch to show my gratitude."

"Well then I'm coming with you. I want to meet the young man who saved the woman that I love." Julian said lovingly before he leaned down and kissed Eve on the lips softly.

"Alright." Eve said while still being kissed by Julian. Just kissing him like this made her legs feel weak. Eve loved kissing Julian because every time he kisses her, it feels like she's drowning in his love and she loved that feeling. Breaking apart after being kissed like that, Eve rested her head on his shoulder again while Julian ran his fingers in her hair.

"So Eve, you never told me his name."

"His name is Devin…Devin Johnson."

"Well you've had a weird day today, so I'll let you get some rest." He said as he kissed her one more time on the lips before walking over to the door.

"Julian…" Eve said as Julian turned back around to face her.

"Yes darling…?"

"Don't leave me, just stay here and hold me." Eve said as she walked up to Julian, took one of his hands and led him over to the bed to join her.
