The Awakening - (Evian) - Chapter Twenty-One

Chapter XXI
The countdown begins…

The next two days would’ve gone by pretty uneventful had it not been for a few strange occurrences happening. The second Eve awakened that morning; she felt a sense of dread run through her veins. She knew that something bad was going to happen, but she just didn’t know what. The other night after the little stunt Julian tried to pull earlier that afternoon, true to his word…he followed her everywhere! She couldn’t even go for a run in the woods without Julian beside her.

What was really going on?!

She tried to bribe Sylvester into telling her, but he refused. She even asked Gabriel and Joseph but they remained tight-lipped. She sighed, being the only woman amongst men really sucked. She was easily outvoted! Suddenly, she realized it was very quiet…a little too quiet. Was she so into her own little world that she failed to notice everyone MIA? A sly smirk appeared on her lips, as she stood from her spot on the floor in the den and carefully walked over to the doorway.

Once there, she began stiffing around to make sure the coast was clear. When she was ready, Eve slowly made her way down the hall looking back every once in a while to make sure that everything was still safe before coming to a stop in front of the patio door.

This felt so low.

Why did she have to sneak around just to go out back to get some fresh air? She snorted loudly at how stupid this situation was and just as she was about ready to open the patio door, Julian suddenly appeared…right…in front…of…her…

Damn!

While Sylvester and the others stepped out to gather the last of their equipment for later on tonight, Julian thought it would be a good time to continue working on the camouflage technique Sylvester taught him a few days ago. The minute Sylvester whispered what he whispered in his ear that day, Julian knew he had to protect Eve at all cost…even if it meant his own life. So when the others left, he left with them. It was a good thing Eve didn’t notice anything because it gave him enough time to get to the hiding spot he setup high in the trees a day earlier and just…watch her.

She stayed in her spot on the floor for a few more minutes before getting up. Even though he couldn’t see her as she exited the room, he knew that Eve was heading his way. Julian also knew that Eve now must’ve felt like he did all those weeks ago when she kept him cooped up in the cabin. Once she appeared in front of the patio door, he watched as she hesitated for a bit and that gave him enough time to drop down right in front of her.

“Going somewhere?” Julian folded his arms and asked.

“No.” Eve answered to quickly.

“Right.” he said slowly.

Eve rolled her eyes and sighed.

“All right. I was trying to get some fresh air…and I needed to stretch out my limbs…”

“I see. So you weren’t going anywhere else?” Julian arched a brow.

“No…” Eve answered slowly but truthfully of course...

Moving closer to her, Julian pulled Eve to his chest and gave her a quick kiss on the lips.

“Well now, since we’re out here and you need to ‘stretch’ out your limbs…” Julian grinned, “are you up for a sparring match?”

It was now Eve’s turn to arch a brow as a smirk slowly crept up on her face. “You know it. Too bad you’re not gonna win.”

“I’m gonna beat you this time.” Julian said with a confident voice.

“You said that the last ten times I beat you.”

“Well this time, it’s gonna be different.”

“We’ll see.”

Separating, the two of them split up and took their places across from each other. After ‘stretching’ out her limbs, Eve took her fighting stance. Cracking his knuckles, Julian took his fighting stance too. For a long while, neither of them moved at all. Both were too busy strategizing their offense, that is, until Eve’s eyes flashed light blue. Smirking, his fangs protruding from his bottom lip, Julian’s eyes flashed light blue too and the battle was on…

Running full speed ahead, Julian watched as Eve charged him. He already knew what she was going to do first. Every time they sparred, Eve always charged him and like every time, he would always dodge her. Once Eve appeared too close for his liking, Julian jumped and pulled off a 180-degree side flip to the left before landing on his feet with his back turned her way.

“You really need to change that opening move on yours babe, it’s getting old.” Julian teased.

“You should do the same too?” Eve whispered from behind Julian as she surprised him by grabbing hold of his right arm and flipping him over her shoulder, sending him a good twenty yards away.

“Why’d you throw me that far for?!” Julian snapped as he sat up on the ground and spit the grass out of his mouth from his rough landing.

“That’s for calling me babe. You know I hate it when you call me that.” Eve said dryly.

“Well, that’s too bad…babe.” Julian grinned evilly as Eve narrowed her eyes and charged him again.

Twenty minutes later, Julian was lying down on the ground with Eve hovering over him with a smug look upon her face.

“Told you so.” she laughed.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Julian mumbled quietly as he slowly sat up before standing.

“Aww, poor baby.” Eve pouted in a teasing matter. She just couldn’t help herself.

Try as he might, Julian couldn’t help but return the smile. Whenever Eve was happy, he was happy. He loved it when she smiled and he loved it when she had a good time. Too bad tomorrow was going to happen…

A few hours later, Sylvester found Julian and Eve resting comfortably in each other arms on the grass in backyard. They were staring up at the stars above. He never thought he would see the day that Eve Johnson would fall deeply in love with someone. Probably because he always thought that that someone would be him…but he knew better, right? He had prayed that this part of the Book of Legends would never come true, but it did, just as he knew it would. Realizing that it was getting late, Sylvester sighed before walking towards them.

Julian was the first to look up and find Sylvester hovering over them.

“We should be getting ready Julian. It’s almost time.” Sylvester said then turned his head to see Eve staring at him funny.

“Almost time for what?” Eve asked, confusing etched on her face as she and Julian stood up.

Sylvester looked at Julian, and Julian looked back at him.

“Tomorrow is the day Eve.” Julian whispered. He really didn’t want her to know. He didn’t want her fighting tomorrow.

“What are you tal…” Eve started then stopped as realization dawned on her.

Oh hell no…

“Eve…” Sylvester started.

“Not a word,” she snapped at him, then turned her heated gaze on Julian. “You sneaky sonofab*tch. How could you not tell me?” she sneered.

“You know why.” Julian replied in a serious tone, looking her straight in the eyes. “I don’t want you fighting them.”

“And I already told you that you don’t have a say so in my decision. I will have my revenge.” Eve growled, her eyes began turning light blue and her fangs emerging.

“I don’t think so.” Julian growled right back at her.

Damn it all…here they go again!

“Eve, please listen to Julian on this matter. He’s just trying to look out for you, protect you.” Sylvester pleaded.

“Go to hell! All this time you knew, and never said a damn word. Tomorrow’s date was written in that damn book wasn’t it?!” Eve spat venomously.

“Yes…but we can’t have you fighting at all. It’s the only way to…”

“Sylvester don’t!” Julian cut him off.

“Don’t you dare…” Eve whispered in a threatening voice. “Tell me now! I deserve to know!”

“Julian, I have to.” Sylvester mumbled.

“No you don’t. Please I’m begging you don’t.” Julian pleaded.

Lowering his head, Sylvester began…

“Everything in the book as has come true so far. No matter how differently I’ve tried to live my life, no matter how hard I tried to avoid it, everything the book said I would do, I did. And the same can be said about you and Julian.” He paused before looking back up. “The book says that you’re the chosen one. The one who will end all of this but at a cost...”

“What cost?” Eve demanded.

“It stated that…” Sylvester paused again then looked at Julian, who was still pleading, this time silently with his eyes.

“Tell me…”

“It stated that, by your hands Dante will die, by your hands Amon will die, but by Amon’s hands…so will you.”

Silence-

Eve began shaking her head. “So you’re saying that…even though I am the chosen one, even though I get my revenge, I’m gonna die?” she lowered her head. This was not happening. Eve refused to let the tears that formed in her eyes fall. “Did you ever think that this may be the one time the book could be wrong…huh?!”

“It hasn’t been wrong yet.” Sylvester mumbled somberly.

“Well this time it will be.” Eve said confidently.

“Eve…” Julian called out to her as she began walking away.

“Do you know what really makes this situation hurt the most?” Eve mumbled quietly.

“No.”

“Is the fact that you didn’t believe in me...in us…”

Julian stepped forward.

“I do believe in us Eve, I believe you, but…” Eve held her hand up to cut him off.

“See that’s just it, there should be no ‘but’ anywhere.” she whispered somberly before walking away from Julian and Sylvester. Yet again she needed to clear her head.

Julian watched as Eve disappeared from his view. The expression on his face said it all…

This was one of the darkest days of his life…one that he was soon going to regret…

A short while later, Gabriel and Joseph returned…with the person from the day before. Joseph woke up earlier this morning and couldn’t keep this secret from Eve any longer. Motioning for Gabriel and the other person to follow him, Joseph led them down the hall to the den. Once there, he found Julian and Sylvester sitting quietly on the couch, staring into the fireplace, but no Eve.

“Where’s Eve?” he blurted out.

“In her room.” Was all Sylvester said.

“I really need her here now, it’s important.”

Turning his gaze towards the doorway, Julian looked and found man he’d never seen before, standing next to Joseph and Gabriel.

“What’s going on here? Who is this man?” he asked suspiciously.

“He’s the reason we need Eve here.”

“Who are you and what do you want with Eve?!” Julian snapped causing Joseph to flinch.

What the hell was wrong with him?!

Suddenly, the person spoke in a thick, raspy voice catching Julian off guard. “From the sound of your voice and the color of your eyes young man, you’re a halfling just like her. Just like I knew you would be.”

Julian snarled as he stood up from the couch and looked the man up and down.

“What did you say old man?!”

“And you’re possessive too, which means that you’re her mate…am I right? You don’t have to answer that of course because I know that too.” he grinned.

Who the f*** was this man?!

Turning to face Sylvester, the man nearly did a double take.

“Well I’ll be…you look just like Micah. Let me guess, you’re his grandson right?”

Sylvester nodded slowly, never taking his eyes off of the man.

“You look familiar…yet older.” Sylvester whispered.

Where had he seen this man before?

“Well I have lived a long time…way too long.”

“I’m still waiting for your damn name old man.” Julian interrupted.

“Wow, you’re impatient too. Well if you must know, my name is…” but he never got the chance to answer as Sylvester beat him to it.

“Oh my God...you’re her father…you’re Eve’s father Uriah Warren…but how...” Sylvester blurted out just as Gabriel, who had secretly left to retrieve Eve, came running back into the den.

“She’s gone! Eve’s gone!”
