Chapter VIII

Blurry…everything was blurry, Julian thought as he struggled to keep his eyes open. Where was he, was the next thing he thought of as he blinked his eyes two more times. Once he was finally able to see things clearly, he noticed that the room he was in was completely white, and on closer inspection, to the right of him, he could hear beeping sounds. That’s when realization finally dawned on him…

He was in a hospital.

How the hell did he end up here? And where was Eve? The monitors to the side of him suddenly became erratic as he struggled to move his battered body, but no matter how much he tried to, he couldn’t. Movement to the left of him signaled that he wasn’t the only one in the room.

“E…” he tried to call out her name, but the second he did…he immediately had coughing fit.

“Take it easy Julian.” The person to the left of him said.

He knew that voice…

“Max…” Julian grimaced as he turned and watched Max come into view. “What happened?”

“There was an accident. While you were driving behind me, something crashed into the window shield of your car and caused you to lose control. The impact from the crash ejected you from your seat.” Max said then watched as Julian face lit up with recognition.

“Where is Eve? Is she here?” Julian asked then closed his eyes for a second.

“Julian…”

“Where is she?” Julian demanded.

“I don’t know. When I arrived at the scene, I only found you…she was gone.”

Opening his eyes, Julian stared at the ceiling then took a deep breath before asking his next question.

“How long have I been here Max…truthfully?”

“Three weeks.”

The sunlight shining through the bars of the window signaled that a new day had come. Standing up as best she could, Eve walked over towards the front of the bars and began banging on them as hard as she could.

When she came to again, a few hours after the crash, Eve knew that she wasn’t in the woods anymore. A few days must have passed because when she woke up, she found herself trapped in what looked like a jail cell. She was just too weak at the time to break the bars, let alone dent them but that wasn’t going to stop her from trying.

“Must you keep hurting yourself like that Eve…”

“Go to hell!” Eve snapped.

“Feisty…I love that in a mate.” Dante smirked then licked his bottom lip.

Rolling her eyes, “Whatever.”

Moving a little closer to the bars, Eve jumped back a bit as she watched Dante slide right through them! Dante then walked over to where she was standing and stood right in front of her.

“You’re different. I can see it in your eyes.” He whispered then raised his right hand up to Eve’s face to push the strand of hair behind her ear but was stopped as Eve slapped his hand away.

“Don’t you even think about touching me...” Eve spat.

“I can do whatever I want with you. You are my mate, and I make the rules.” Dante sneered, bearing his fangs.

“You don’t own me you bastard.” Eve sneered then bared her fangs right back at him. “As I recall, when a vampire sires a mortal with the intent of making them their mate, the mortal has to consent ..am I right?”

Silence-

“I thought so.” She smirked victoriously. “You sired me all those years ago against my will and I never gave in. So technically, you are not my mate.” Eve narrowed her eyes in on Dante. She did her research…

“But I will be very, very soon.” Dante looked her up and down. “You can’t resist me for long.”

Eve didn’t like the way he said that. “You seem so sure of yourself.”

“And I am.”

Back at the hospital, Max had to get three nurses to help hold Julian down. The minute he found out that Eve was missing and that he had been unconscious for three weeks, he became hysterical.

“Julian please, calm down!”

“How can I be calm when Eve is missing? Don’t you see…I have to find her, she needs me!” Julian shouted then grimaced in pain as he struggled to free himself from the restraints the nurses placed on him.

“Eve’s a vamp,” Max whispered. “I’m sure she can take care of herself.”

“Under normal circumstances yes, but not against him.” Julian continued struggling.

“Him?” Max was confused.

“The one who made her what she is.”

“Oh.”

Finally giving up because he tired himself out, Julian took in a deep breath then exhaled. “I can’t lose her to him Max. All I know is that I need her.”

“What are you saying Julian?” Max asked, even though he kind of already knew what Julian was talking about.

“You know what I mean.” Julian closed his eyes then opened them. “In the short period of time that I’ve known her, I’ve fallen for her Max. Eve’s not like other women, you know? She’s different. It’s like she completes the other half of me.” He mumbled quietly.

Meantime, while still in her cell, Eve began to panic. For the second time in a little more then five weeks, she hadn’t fed. And of all places to go into hunger fit, she thought bitterly. Walking over to the only opening on the wall behind her, Eve’s mind drifted to thoughts of Julian.

Had he survived? Or was he dead? Over and over again, those same two thoughts replayed in her mind until she grew tired thinking. Rubbing her temples softly, she rested her back against the wall and slid all the way down to the floor.

“What’s the matter Eve? You don’t look very good.” Dante asked in a sickeningly sweet voice, as he entered into her cell for the second time.

“Nothing...I’m fine.” She snapped as beads of sweat began to form at her brows. She had to get out of here fast! Carefully, Eve stood back up but didn’t step away from the wall.

“Are you sure?” He said as he closed the distance between them. Using his right hand, he slowly tilted her chin upwards then leaned in closer. “So you haven’t fed, hmm?” Dante whispered in a husky voice, then ran his tongue across her bottom lip.

The feel of his tongue on her bottom lip, made Eve immediately cringe with disgust. The nerve of this bastard, Eve fumed on the inside. Before she realized what was going on, Dante crushed his lips to hers. Eve tried her best to fight him off, but because of her weakened state, her struggling was useless.

Dante had waited too damn long for this moment in his opinion as he slowly deepened the kiss. Sure he had kissed many women over the years, but never had any of them ignited this kind of lust out of him before. It didn’t matter that Eve was weakened to the point of hunger; all he knew was that he needed her now!

“Submit to me…” he commanded as he tore his lips from Eve’s and slowly placed open mouth kisses down her neck. “Submit to me Eve…you know you want to.”

By this time, Eve wasn’t even in a clear state of mind anymore as Dante continued to have his way with her. She knew this wasn’t what she wanted but yet her body was reacting to his touch against her will! Suddenly, her vision began to blur as everything around her started spinning. She blinked her eyes once…

“Submit to me…” Dante commanded again as he bared his fangs this time.

Blinking her once more, Eve mumbled the only thing that came to her mind before everything went black… “Julian…”

Julian…

The moment he heard his name, Julian knew something was wrong. Max had left a few minutes ago to head over to Grace’s to get them something to eat. Hospital was always terrible. Grimacing, Julian slowly swung his legs over the side of the bed then carefully stood up while holding his left side before limping over to the closet. Once there, he opened it and found some clothes and shoes to change into. When he was finally dressed, he limped over to the door. Taking a deep breath, he opened the door, looked both ways then walked out into the hall.

Ten minutes later, Max returned with two bags of food in his hand only to come face to face with an empty room. Shaking his head he sighed, ‘Stubborn bastard…’

Dante slammed open his chamber door then walked over to the end table and threw the lamp sitting on it across the room.

Damn it all to hell!

Julian…that’s whose name Eve called out. That damn bastard of a mortal. How dare she call out another man’s name when it was he who aroused her body! All his years of waiting were now ruined, all because of a mortal man…a mortal man who had somehow wormed his way into Eve’s heart. Now there was no way for him to claim Eve rightfully as his mate because she had soulfully claimed another.

Damn it all…unless…

Dante grinned devilishly bearing his pointy fangs, then exited his room heading right back to Eve’s cell.

When Eve came to this time, she found herself slumped in the corner against the wall from earlier. What had Dante done to her? She knew that she was already weak from not feeding, and then everything went black. Blinking her eyes a few more times, she finally stood back up and pressed her face to the wall. At first everything was quiet, but then she heard what sounded like water flowing from down below. Even though she was physically drained, she had to get out of this cell now. Bearing her fangs, she pulled away from the wall slightly and staggered backwards onto the cell bars. Somehow, that wall was coming down...

From behind her, the door opened up and Dante walked through.

“You thought you outsmarted huh?” he chuckled wickedly. “Calling out that mortal’s name, right when I had you.”

Silence-

“Why so quiet Eve? Cat got your tongue.” Dante said sarcastically.

So that’s what she did…no wonder he was angry…

The minute Dante walked through the door, warning signals immediately went off inside of her head. Eve already knew what he wanted, but she wasn’t willing to give that up without a fight! Looking over her shoulder, she watched as Dante slowly approached the bars. Turning to look back at the wall, Eve made up her mind.

It was now or never…

As soon as he reached for the bars, Dante’s eyes grew huge as he watched Eve take off and launch herself through the wall of the cell!

“NOOO!”

Two weeks had passed since Eve’s escape. Dante looked everywhere for her, but always came up empty. He knew for a fact that she couldn’t have left Harmony yet because he had vampires from his coven patrolling the outside borders of the town. Suddenly an idea came to mind…

Why hadn’t he thought about that sooner? Walking over to his bed, he sat down, then picked up his phone and dialed a few numbers.

“Hello?”

“Mortal…”

“Lord Dante…”

“I need something from you…” Dante said as he ran his fingers through his hair.

Three months had passed since Julian left the hospital with the intent of finding Eve. He had been hiding quietly underground while still recovering because the police, the hunters and the vampires were all out looking for him. Eve had told him that they were going to come after him because of her, but he didn’t care now…he needed her.

Tonight was the first time that he was out in the open. He needed to get something from his home fast. Making sure that no one was around; he climbed through one of the broken windows in the back of the house, then proceeded quietly down the hall to his bedroom. When he got to his bedroom door, he placed his left hand softly on the knob then turned it as gentle as possible. Once he was inside, Julian closed the door behind him, then turned and came face to face with…

“Eve…”
